About

Worldreader is a global tech nonprofit on a mission to get families reading. Founded in 2010 as a U.S. 501(c)(3) organization, Worldreader supports parents and caregivers in underserved communities with free digital tools and resources that help them build daily reading routines with their children — routines the organization ties to improved learning outcomes and stronger social-emotional skills. Headquartered in the United States and registered in Spain, Kenya, and the United Kingdom, Worldreader draws on more than 15 years of experience designing, testing, and scaling evidence-based approaches to family reading in response to what it calls the global literacy crisis.

Mission

Worldreader describes itself as "a global tech nonprofit on a mission to get families reading." Its work centers on parent- and caregiver-led reading: equipping families with books, activities, and practical guidance so that shared reading becomes a joyful daily habit. The organization emphasizes that as little as 10 minutes of shared reading a day can produce meaningful developmental benefits in early childhood.

What they do

  • BookSmart: Worldreader's flagship free digital app helps parents and caregivers build daily reading routines with children ages 0 to 8. The app offers thousands of culturally relevant books along with playful activities and practical tips, and works on devices families already own.
  • Reading Routines, Reading Games, and Reading Circles: the three pillars of Worldreader's approach, combining daily shared reading, play-based learning, and a global community platform for literacy advocates.
  • Program design and research: Worldreader designs and scales evidence-based family reading approaches focused on early childhood development, pre-literacy skills, and family cohesion. In a 2024 Reading Heroes Challenge in Kenya, participating families read 25 or more books, and children were exposed to over 30,000 words, including 3,000 unique words.
  • Partnerships and campaigns: recent initiatives include the All Families Reading Challenge (launched September 2026) and The Belonging Collection of youth-authored children's books, created in partnership with AHSHAY.

Scale and impact

Worldreader reports having reached 22 million readers, with partners in 110 countries and more than 80 million books read through its programs. For 2025, the organization reports reaching over 320,000 families, with more than 1,000,000 digital books read, over 475,000 reading activities completed, and more than 15,000 families establishing sustained reading habits (completing 10 or more books). Its research in Kenya found measurable gains in early literacy and social-emotional skills among families using BookSmart, with stronger results for families who read more frequently.

Financials

Worldreader publishes annual reports, audited financial statements, and IRS Form 990s dating back to 2010 on its website. According to its Form 990 data on ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer, for fiscal year 2023 Worldreader reported total revenue of 5,008,152 dollars, total expenses of 8,432,593 dollars, and net assets-end total assets of 8,926,695 dollars.
