About

To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA) is a nonprofit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide. Based in Melbourne, Florida, the organization exists to encourage, inform, inspire, and invest directly in treatment and recovery, meeting people in moments of crisis with the message that better days are possible.

Mission

TWLOHA's stated mission is to present hope and find help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide. The organization operates on four core beliefs: people are created to love and be loved, people need each other, stories matter, and better days are possible.

What they do

  • Responds to messages from people in crisis and connects them to crisis support resources and hotlines
  • Maintains the Find Help Tool, a searchable database that helps people locate mental health resources by zip code
  • Offers a Mental Health Toolkit with therapist-led practices and free peer support groups
  • Publishes personal mental health stories through its blog and podcast
  • Provides the Hopeful App, a free self-care application
  • Invests directly in treatment and recovery through donations to partner organizations

History

TWLOHA began in 2006, when founder Jamie Tworkowski wrote a story about helping his friend Renee Yohe, who was battling addiction, depression, self-injury, and suicidal thoughts. He sold T-shirts to help fund her treatment and shared the story online; the response grew into a movement, and the organization officially incorporated as a nonprofit in 2007. The IRS granted its tax exemption in 2009.

Scale and impact

According to figures published on its website, since 2006 TWLOHA has responded to 210,000 messages from people in more than 100 countries, traveled 3.8 million miles to bring its message to communities, and published more than 1,100 blog posts. Its Find Help Tool has recorded 56,000 searches since 2018, and the organization has donated 3 million dollars to treatment and recovery across 105 organizations.

Financials

TWLOHA Inc is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization (EIN 26-0789229). Per ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer, in fiscal year 2024 the organization reported total revenue of 3,102,478 dollars, total expenses of 3,576,821 dollars, and net assets of 1,638,390 dollars.
