About

Reinvestment Fund is a mission-driven financial institution committed to making communities work for all people. Born in 1985 as the Delaware Valley Community Reinvestment Fund, it has grown into a national leader in community finance and policy analysis, headquartered in Philadelphia with additional offices in Atlanta and Baltimore. The organization is certified by the U.S. Department of the Treasury as a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), and since its inception has provided over 3.2 billion dollars in financing to strengthen neighborhoods, scale social enterprises, and build resilient communities.

Mission

Reinvestment Fund brings financial and analytical tools to partnerships that work to ensure everyone has access to essential opportunities: affordable places to live, access to nutritious food and health care, schools where children can flourish, and strong local businesses that support jobs. It uses data to understand markets, communities, and impediments to opportunity — and how investment and policy decisions can have the most powerful impact.

What they do

  • Financing: loans for community projects including affordable housing, commercial real estate, early childhood education, equitable food systems, health care, K-12 education, climate and sustainability projects, and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), plus New Markets Tax Credit and Pay for Success structures.
  • Grants and assistance: programs such as early childhood education grants, the HBCU Brilliance Initiative, and food systems programs including the national Healthy Food Financing Initiative.
  • Research and data: policy solutions including the Market Value Analysis for neighborhood revitalization, the Limited Supermarket Analysis for food access, and housing and early childhood education analytics.
  • Impact investing: investment options open to individuals nationally starting at 1,000 dollars.

History

Reinvestment Fund was established in 1985 with a vision to exceed the scope of traditional community development organizations by pairing lending with insights from data and research to deliver financial and social returns. Founding director Jeremy Nowak created an institution that united schoolteachers and executives with faith-based organizations, philanthropy, banks and government to invest in communities, helping build the foundation for the opportunity finance sector. Today the organization has a team of more than 80 people across three offices.
