About

The Patient Access Network Foundation (PAN Foundation) is a national charitable foundation and healthcare advocacy organization based in Washington, DC, dedicated to accelerating access to treatment for those who need it most and empowering patients on their healthcare journeys. An independent 501(c)(3) organization (EIN 20-1184743, IRS tax exemption issued September 2004), PAN provides financial assistance for treatment costs, advocates for policy solutions that expand access to care, and delivers patient education. In 2026 it united with the Patient Advocate Foundation to form a single combined organization.

Mission

PAN describes its mission as "to accelerate access to affordable, equitable healthcare through financial assistance, advocacy, and education." The organization envisions "a future where equitable, accessible healthcare is a reality for all."

What they do

  • Disease-specific assistance funds — charitable grants that help patients afford treatment across a broad range of serious and chronic health conditions.
  • Copay grants, health insurance premium grants, and transportation grants for eligible patients.
  • FundFinder — a tool patients can sign up for to be alerted when assistance funds open.
  • Advocacy — championing policies that improve healthcare access, affordability, and equity, including position statements, policy letters, and testimony.
  • Research — the PAN Foundation's Center for Patient Research, including its State of Patient Access Report and patient polling and surveys.
  • Education — resources on Medicare, clinical trials, copay accumulators and maximizers, and patient financial assistance, including Spanish-language materials.

Scale and impact

Since 2004, PAN's financial assistance programs have helped more than 1.2 million people to start or stay on life-changing treatment. The organization also reports major policy victories that increase access to care, mobilization of patient advocates, and nationwide education on healthcare topics.

Merger with Patient Advocate Foundation

In March 2026, the PAN Foundation and Patient Advocate Foundation announced a merger to create a unified nonprofit focused on helping people navigate, access, and afford healthcare, drawing on more than 50 years of combined experience. Together the two organizations report having served 3.8 million patients and provided $7 billion in financial assistance. On July 1, 2026, the unified organization launched TotalAssist, described as "the nation's largest charitable patient assistance portfolio," comprising nearly 150 disease-specific and health equity funds.

Financials

According to its IRS Form 990 as reported by ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer, for fiscal year 2024 the PAN Foundation reported total revenue of $203,018,273, total expenses of $164,252,647, and total assets of $471,257,493. Contributions represented 94.5% of total revenue, at approximately $191.8 million.
