About

NAMI Memphis is the Memphis, Tennessee affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. It is a grassroots, self-help organization dedicated to improving quality of life for individuals with mental illness, their families, and their communities, working through mutual support, education, and advocacy. All of its classes and support groups are offered free of charge, delivered largely by trained volunteers who have personally experienced the impact of mental illness in their own lives or families.

Mission

NAMI Memphis pursues its mission by providing family education and support; serving as an information, resource, and referral center; monitoring mental health care facilities and programs for adequacy and accountability; educating mental health professionals about the lived experience of mental illness; promoting legislation based on NAMI's advocacy agenda; advocating for quality, recovery-oriented treatment; promoting community supports such as appropriate housing linked with social and vocational rehabilitation; and promoting research into prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and cures.

What they do

  • NAMI Family-to-Family: a free 8-session course for family, friends, and loved ones of people affected by conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, borderline personality disorder, anxiety disorders, and PTSD, covering communication skills, medications, coping skills, self-care, and recovery.
  • Beginnings/NAMI Basics: classes for parents and other primary caregivers of children and adolescents with mental illness, teaching brain biology, specific disorders, and coping and advocacy skills.
  • NAMI Homefront: an educational course for family, caregivers, and friends of military service members and veterans living with mental illness.
  • Support groups, including a Family Support Group, the With Hope in Mind group for caregivers of adult mental health consumers, an SOS Schizophrenia and Schizoaffective support group, and connections to peer-led groups such as BRIDGES.
  • Community events such as NAMIWalks Memphis and mental health town halls, plus crisis information and referrals.
