About

Mental Health America (MHA) is one of the United States' oldest mental health advocacy organizations. Founded in 1909 and headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, MHA works at both the national and local levels — through a network of affiliates across the country — to promote mental health, prevent mental illness, and improve care for people living with mental health conditions.

Mission

Mental Health America advances the mental health and well-being of all people living in the U.S. through public education, research, advocacy and public policy, and direct service. The organization emphasizes that its work is informed, designed, and led by the lived experience of those most affected.

What they do

  • Public education and free online mental health screening tools
  • Advocacy and public policy work at the national and local levels
  • Research and reports, including the annual State of Mental Health in America report
  • Youth leadership initiatives
  • Workplace wellness programs and resources
  • Clinical trial resources
  • An annual national conference (the 2026 conference is scheduled for October 8-9 in Washington, DC)

History

MHA was established in 1909 by Clifford W. Beers, a person with lived experience of mental illness who witnessed abuse in mental institutions and launched a reform movement that grew into the organization.

Scale and impact

MHA operates through a network of affiliates across the country and reaches millions of people with trusted resources, tools, and live learning experiences. The organization states that a $25 donation allows it to reach 500 individuals with essential public education tools and resources. MHA holds a Charity Navigator 4-star rating, CharityWatch Top Rated status, and a Candid Platinum Transparency seal.
