About

GLAAD is a New York-based nonprofit organization focused on LGBTQ advocacy and cultural change. Describing itself as the world's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) media advocacy organization, GLAAD works to ensure fair, accurate, and inclusive representation of LGBTQ people in media and creates national and local programs that advance LGBTQ acceptance. It is a 501(c)(3) public charity (EIN 13-3384027).

Mission

As a dynamic media force, GLAAD ensures fair, accurate, and inclusive representation that rewrites the script for LGBTQ acceptance. The organization tackles tough issues to shape the narrative and provoke dialogue that leads to cultural change, protects what has been accomplished, and envisions a world with 100% LGBTQ acceptance.

What they do

GLAAD serves as a storyteller, media force, resource, and advocate. Its programs and initiatives include:

  • The GLAAD Media Institute, providing consulting and training for media, community, and corporate leaders
  • The GLAAD Media Awards, honoring fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people in media
  • Advocacy and accountability work, including news and rapid response, the ALERT Desk, the GLAAD Accountability Project, and a Social Media Safety Program
  • Journalist resources such as fact sheets and the GLAAD Media Reference Guide
  • Work on transgender media and representation, Spanish-language and Latino media (Medios Latinos y en Espanol), GLAAD Gaming, and HIV stigma resources
  • Research such as the "Here We Are" study, civic engagement programs, the 20 Under 20 list, and the annual #SpiritDay campaign against LGBTQ youth bullying

History

GLAAD was founded in 1985. Its founders were a handful of journalists who, seeing family members dying of AIDS, a government unwilling to help, and inflammatory headlines overwhelming newsstands, battled discrimination with facts and compassion. The organization has since grown into a national media advocacy force working to ensure authentic LGBTQ stories are seen, heard, and actualized.

Financials

According to its IRS Form 990 filings compiled by ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer, GLAAD reported total revenue of $25.3 million (including $27.7 million in contributions and grants), total expenses of $21.2 million, and net assets at year end of $52.3 million for the fiscal year ending September 2023. In the prior fiscal year (ending September 2022), it reported $18.6 million in revenue and $14.6 million in expenses. GLAAD publishes financial reporting and accountability information on its website.
