About

Family Equality is a national nonprofit organization headquartered in New York City that works to advance equality for LGBTQ+ families. For more than four decades, the organization has supported LGBTQ+ parents and prospective parents through community programs, resources, and policy advocacy across the United States.

Mission

Family Equality's mission is to ensure that everyone has the freedom to find, form, and sustain their families by advancing equality for the LGBTQ+ community.

What they do

  • Family resources — guidance and support for LGBTQ+ people at every stage of family life, from prospective parents exploring paths to parenthood to current parents seeking family protections.
  • LGBTQ+ Provider Database — a directory that helps families find welcoming and affirming service providers.
  • Community events — in-person and virtual gatherings that bring LGBTQ+ families together, including Night at the Pier, Night OUT, and Family Week.
  • Policy advocacy — work to advance equitable laws and policies in areas including family law, education, child welfare, and equity.
  • Storytelling and education — community storytelling initiatives, educational programming, and a platform for families to share their stories, along with speaker requests for events and media.

Family Equality traces its founding to 1979, when it was established at the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. In the decades since, it has grown into a national organization advancing the rights and well-being of LGBTQ+ families.
